Confrontation

Confrontation is an oil painting of an imagined landscape situated in a larger fictional world. My practice investigates how the imagination is an extension of life through the making of fantastical images, tangible representations of the evanescent things of the mind. Renditions of this fictional world have become a space for specific experiences to be solidified externally— as if that could ground the ephemeral and disembodied life inside our heads. In this way, they are disarmed representations of (my) experience, and Confrontation is one of those experiences. In this work the viewer is situated in front of a splitting path; in their field of view they see a low sun and a wilting dandelion, as well as the direction of each path, fading into the background, one going up and one down. The scene is meant to evoke a feeling of losing time at the face of a decision, and the unfulfilled wish of knowing the answer. As the image is meant to draw the viewer into the landscape, as if they were the avatars exploring this mysterious space, the painting should be hung at eye level. For this the painting will require 1-2 nails (depending on their strength) to be hung, ideally in a somewhat secluded area so that the viewer is distanced from distraction as they immerse themselves in the imagery.
